A statement by Timothy Lee, Candidate for Membership to CUHK Convocation Standing Committee, on the arrest of CUHK students on 25 Jan

Many CUHK alumni, I believe, would concur with me on standing with the suppressed students. As a candidate for Convocation committee membership, an elected office representing the alumni community, I urge leaders and members of alumni associations to continue their involvement with the governance of the University by being a vocal critic of University’s policies and supporting current students who face unjust treatment at campus. I also urge the alumni’s representative in University Council to face up the current deep mistrust between students and the management of the University and use their capacities to kick-start conversations to address such mistrust.

As a member of CUHK community, I feel upset to see our juniors to face persecution out of their actions against University policies they saw as unjust. The University authorities failed to bear the pressure from the state and chose to put all blames on students – it is even more devastating and frustrating, for myself as well as many fellow alumni.

The current Standing Committee of the Convocation, two seats in which are now vacant due to the postponement of AGM for pandemic reason, issued a statement on 13 January in support of the University authorities’ action. I must make this absolutely clear that the Statement in no way reflect my view.
